STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENCY OF THE BROTHERS SAÍZ ASSOCIATION

"CUBA IS NOT ALONE"

A few days ago, in the city of Holguin, more than 300 young intellectuals and artists that came from the 20 countries taking part in the 17th edition of the May Pilgrimages, expressed, in the encounter’s Final Statement, their rejection to the international media campaign, intended to distort the Cuban reality, concealing the achievements its people and the size of the example set, and the assertion of our country’s rights “to exist as a free and sovereign nation.

Today we feel obliged to speak out against the unusual Spanish platform for the democratization of Cuba, composed of figures of literature, journalism and the spectacle of the Iberian nation, which has just revealed, at a press conference, a "Manifesto" which aims to "help the Cuban people to achieve democracy as soon as possible.

This is a clear attempt not to abandon the anti-Cuban campaign that from the most powerful media has been articulating against our country.
In an act of interference that is reminiscent of the worst years of colonial history, the promoters of this "Manifesto" disqualify and brand as "totalitarian" to our social and political model. Naïve to what they call a "fierce and painful dictatorship" has just received public support and majority of all generations of Cubans in the election of delegates of the People and the massive demonstrations on the occasion of May Day, acts of legitimate democracy they do not want to understand.

As part of the media show, an EFE cable dated yesterday in Madrid, takes the risks to head the piece of news with the headline: "The great figures in Spanish culture fiercely denounce the Castro dictatorship." It also publishes a picture, reproduced by other sort of media, in which, before a huge fund with the official logo of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, pose with some of the frivolity that sign the document.

The immediate purposes of this show are made explicit in the statements of the few signers who attended the event. Strongly alluded to the Sixth European Union-Latin America and the Caribbean to be held next week in Madrid: "You can not allow," said one of them – this summit should be geared to smooth relations with the Castro brothers. Both leaders of the European Union and Latin America, must be condemned, pressured and forced so they get involved in this struggle for freedom. "

In view of this confession, why not understand the "manifesto" as a desperate action with which seek to avoid by all means to generate sympathy for Cuba, in an environment hostile to Latin American and Caribbean colonial policy of the European bloc.

This pathetic maneuver clearly attacked Zapatero's government to consider its foreign policy "with the dictatorship courageous," according to the words expressed by another of the signatories, and articulates with the announcement of former President Aznar to pay a tribute on the eve of that Summit "Cuban Democratic organizations within and outside the island," actually a handful of mercenaries without principles or the less prestigious.

Thus, from a Europe stricken by a deep economic crisis and a dramatic unemployment, some "famous" from Spain, perhaps one or two "big ones" and many undoubted "small ones", join Aznar to" not leave us alone. “They obviously anguish about the solidarity with Cuba that our brothers of Latin America and the Caribbean will surely emerge during the Summit. They are deeply concerned and in despair that at the meeting the U.S. blockade is to be condemned and denounced by the heinous aggression against our country.

The young Cuban writers and artists recognize the essential contribution of the culture of the peoples of Spain and more than once we have paid homage to the greats of the arts and literature in that country. The ethics of Republican and anti-fascist Spain is ours. At the same time, reject all colonial maneuver and find it particularly repugnant that this so-called "Platform" is presented to worldwide in a manner so gross and cultural coverage apparently.

The Cubans, we have never felt alone. We share our achievements and hopes with millions of human beings around the globe. They are aware of humanism that encloses the ideas and principles for half a century have proclaimed the Cuban Revolution.
